Coast Capital Savings has embarked on a program that brings a fresh
approach to banking. Coast Capital Saving's new branches are called
"Aperio" (from the Latin word "to make open"). Aperio branches have
more in common with retail stores than they do with traditional
financial institutions and, in fact, Coast Capital Savings refer to them
as "stores", not branches.
Aperio rejects many of the traditional features found at most financial
institutions such as teller counters, dark wood, line ups, and manager's
offices. Instead, customers are greeted on arrival and sit side by side
with staff at "help stations". At the new Aperio stores, the interior architecture has been fashioned
to provide customers with a more comfortable, informal experience.
Entering a new Aperio, the customer will encounter a high, open space
with bright, attractive colours and lots of daylight. There is a strong
emphasis on circular forms in Aperio. The circular form symbolizes arms
embracing the customer and is intended to be more inclusive and
welcoming than traditional bank architecture. The circle radiates from
the greater's desk and is enhanced by circular floor patterns and a
circular "cloud" ceiling. The curved feature wall at the rear of the
banking hall is also based on a segment of a circle and greets the
customer with the iconic "How can we help you?" motif that is a common
element in all of Coast Capital Saving's branches. Throughout the
branch, the colours and lighting highlight the important functional and
service areas and provide a beacon for the customer to guide them to
staff. The exterior of the stores have as much glazing as possible to
provide a bright, inviting and open environment for the customers. Coast Capital Savings has completed five Aperio stores to date and is
initiating a program to renovate their existing branches to the new
Aperio format.
